What is Maundy Thursday?
Maundy Thursday commemorates Christ’s “mandate,” with “maundy” originating from the Latin word mandatum, meaning “command.” This observance falls on the Thursday of Christ’s final week before his crucifixion and resurrection, during which he imparted a crucial directive to his disciples. During the Last Supper, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and delivered these words: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).
